Nike T-Shirt Error Proves The Value of Proof-Reading Your Promotional Products

July 17th, 2013 No comments

Who Proof-Reads Your Promotional Items and Marketing Materials?

promotionalproduct artwork proofs

Austin, Texas: Nike had to pull these $32 T-shirts when it was discovered that they used the state of South Carolina, rather than North Carolina, for the Charlotte Panthers T-shirts.

Embarrassing?  Yes!

Could it have been avoided? Yes!

Were these proof-read before printing? Probably not!

Accidents happen all the time–but when it is your marketing and branding message on the line, who is responsible for checking and proofing it?

Since 1985, we have been providing a proof for clients to sign off on BEFORE any promotional items get printed. In the past 12 years, we have been providing electronic proofs.

I tell my clients that now is the time to look for errors, omissions and changes–not after the items have been printed.

It is so much easier to take a moment and look over your work one last time before signing off on a proof.

But someone must be responsible for signing off.

You are too busy, you say?  Well, then find a responsible person to sign off instead.

Avoiding simple accidents like this one just take a few seconds to proof.

Pre-production changes are welcomed and encouraged.

Post-production changes–costly to fix and not so welcomed.

Take the time to review all your promotional marketing items and avoid costly errors.

Happy Marketing!

New Report Shows What Promotional Products People Have Been Buying in 2012

July 15th, 2013 No comments

List of the Most Popular Promotional Items in 2012

Austin, Texas:  A new report from the Promotional Products Association International shows which categories of promotional products were purchased in 2012.

most popular promotional products

No surprise, but wearable of all types lead the list, for the upteenth time.  Wearables would include shirts, caps, jackets, etc.

Imprinted bags moved to second place for the first time-due to the large number of imprinted tote bags sold.

“The dramatic increase in imprinted bags is no surprise. We have been seeing more than 20% year-over-year increases in imprinted tote bag orders since 2008″, reports Robert Piller, President of Eco Marketing Solutions.

Imprinted drinkware is now number four on the list, but I would imagine it will take over the number three spot from writing instruments in the near future. Sales of imprinted water bottles and sports bottles have been soaring – and I see no reason for these sales to slow down, as people are becoming more envrionmentally-friendly.

The biggest percentage dropper on the last is calendars, as these have been replaced by digital and online calendars. I see this category continue to drop further, as the market for imprinted calendars is definitely slanted toward an older consumer.

What categories did you purchase promotional products for this past year?

How does your buying trend compare to the industry average?

Changes in Imprinted Wearables–Big Growth in Name Brand Logoed Apparel

January 28th, 2013 No comments

Name Brand Promotional ClothingAre Your Clients Seeking Out Brand Names for Your Promotional Clothing?

Austin, Texas:  Wearables are the largest category for promotional clothing and includes such favorites as T-shirts and polo shirts, caps, sweatshirts and hoodies, and more.

The biggest trend over the past few years has been the dramatic increase in performance clothing— with wicking and anti-microbial traits. These materials, which started in golf shirts, has now expanded into office polos for their comfort and wrinkle-free appearance.

Now, the newest trend has been the rapid rise in brand name clothing for promotional use.

Up until a few years ago, most T-shirts were Hanes, Fruit of the Loom and Gildan — and that was it for “name brands”.

Polos, jackets and other wearables were usually house brands – as the emphasis was on your logo – and marketers did not want anything to interfere with their own brand.

However, as shoppers have gotten more savvy and name brand conscious, more and more marketing executives are now insisting on name brand clothing – to showcase their own logo.

Brand such as American Apparel, Nike, Izod, Adidas, Van Heusen, Eddie Bauer, Ogio, Columbia,  Carhartt, and Dickies, to name a few, have popped up for promotional markets.

Now it is less expensive to buy these brands from a licensed promotional products distributor (like ourselves) than it is to buy them yourself…and get them co-branded with your logo.

For this special market use, many of these brands have moved their logos to the back, left sleeve or other place so as not to outshine your own logo – but to add to its perceived value.

As usage continues to climb, I see more and more retail brands jumping into the mix and getting their logos and brands into the promotional mix.

“We are seeing customers asking for these brands by name, many times”, says, Robert Piller, President of green marketing firm Eco Marketing Solutions. “It is a way to easily elevate the prestige of your own brand.”

He continues, “Even if you order fewer number of pieces and go with a higher quality brand name, you will be better served in most cases.”

If you are using clothing for your sales team, executive gifts or for golf tournaments or incentive gifts, you might want to consider moving up to branded clothing for your next promotion or event.

Perceptions matter.

Utilize the millions of dollars in advertising that these brands spend annually to promote their brands and coop that goodwill to your own brand.

Its a good way of maximizing the investment of your promotional clothing budget.

Determine Your Marketing Goals..Before Planning Your Strategy

January 25th, 2013 No comments
Create a plan and a vision fo ryour marketing goals--including social media

Does this social media strategy look familiar?

Austin, Texas: I saw this great cartoon on people jumping onto all the different social media platforms–without any clear vision or goal.

Without a clear goal, this shotgun approach will deliver less-than-optimal results and waste much of your marketing spend and time.

Outline your top marketing and sales goals for 2013.

Then, and only then, can you plan a strategy for reaching it.

This applies to the online world–as much as to the real, physical world of marketing.

When I talk with my clients about marketing programs, I try to elicit such useful information as:

  • Goals
  • Measurement of these goals
  • Target audience
  • Reasons for the campaigns
  • Budget
  • Competition Analysis
  • People that will be working on the campaign and their skill sets

Without a road map, you will never know when you have reached your destination.

Determine your marketing vision.

Then work toward that goal.

Don’t let all the newest bells and whistles and apps stand in your way.

Don’t ignore them either.

These tools should be used to help reach your goals.

Not the other way around.

What are your marketing goals for the rest of 2013…and how do you plan to reach those goals?

Study on the Value of Promotional Pens, Pencils and Other Writing Instruments

December 29th, 2012 No comments

The Value of Promotional Pens and Pencils

Austin, Texas: The Advertising Specialty Institute recently did an international study on the value of promotional products — and this infographic shows the value of promotional writing instruments–which would include imprinted pens, pencils, highlighters and more.

Over 50% of Americans have at least one imprinted writing instrument.

How many imprinted pens, highlighters or pencils can you find in your drawers–both at home and at work.

Can you remember the advertiser?

Imprinted writing instruments have one of the lowest cost per thousand impression costs of any other form of advertising.  Have you considered putting your name, logo or message on an imprinted pen or pencil recently?
