New Report Shows What Promotional Products People Have Been Buying in 2012

List of the Most Popular Promotional Items in 2012

Austin, Texas:  A new report from the Promotional Products Association International shows which categories of promotional products were purchased in 2012.

most popular promotional products

No surprise, but wearable of all types lead the list, for the upteenth time.  Wearables would include shirts, caps, jackets, etc.

Imprinted bags moved to second place for the first time-due to the large number of imprinted tote bags sold.

“The dramatic increase in imprinted bags is no surprise. We have been seeing more than 20% year-over-year increases in imprinted tote bag orders since 2008″, reports Robert Piller, President of Eco Marketing Solutions.

Imprinted drinkware is now number four on the list, but I would imagine it will take over the number three spot from writing instruments in the near future. Sales of imprinted water bottles and sports bottles have been soaring – and I see no reason for these sales to slow down, as people are becoming more envrionmentally-friendly.

The biggest percentage dropper on the last is calendars, as these have been replaced by digital and online calendars. I see this category continue to drop further, as the market for imprinted calendars is definitely slanted toward an older consumer.

What categories did you purchase promotional products for this past year?

How does your buying trend compare to the industry average?

Why I’m So Glad to Be Based in Austin, Texas

Eco Marketing Solutions- Proud to Call Austin my homeAustin, TX: I get envious looks every time I meet someone new and tell them I am from Austin, Texas.

I tell everyone and anyone that inquires about Austin – that they have to come down here to enjoy it first hand for at least a full weekend.

As a person that has lived in and around Austin, Texas since 1978, I am excited and blessed be able to call Austin, TX my home.

Austin, the state capital, is home to the University of Texas, my and my wife’s alma mater.

Setting up my promotional products business in Austin, Texas definitely has been one of the best decisions I have ever made.

I have worked selling promotional products since my freshman year of college (1981) – and I have never looked back.

Austin is also home to one of the most well educated workforces and was just voted one of ther cleanest cities in the country.

The more I travel, the more I have come to appreciate Austin. It is a very vibrant city – for people of all ages.

Austin is known as the Live Music Capital of the World–with tons of bars, taverns and other clubs that feature fantastic music – every night.  That is to say nothing about the music festivals, including South by Southwest (SXSW), ACL Music Fest, plus Austin City Limits to name just a few.

Austin is even home to the newest Formula One racing track in the country- an event that is surely going to bring tens of thousands of international fans into our city (where hopefully they will leave after spending a great deal of money)!

As my youngest child ponders where he wants to college next year, he is torn about having to move away from this great city – as the University of Texas’ admissions policy is getting to be a bit too selective–choosing only the Top 8% of Texas high school students, regardless of the difficulty of a school’s curriculum or rank.

That being said, I imagine he will be coming back to Austin in four years– and home on as many weekends as he can.

I am thankful to all my great customers who have allowed me to continue to live and make a very nice living in the city of Austin.  I have quite a few friends that would move to Austin, in a heartbeat, if they were able to make a living here.

I look forward to living in Austin for the rest of my life – and to continue to run and grow my business – Eco Marketing Solutions – from Austin as well.

We continue to see tremendous growth in the promotional products industry – and our niche, eco-friendly promotional products in particular, is ideally suited for Austin, Texas.

As Austin brings in more high-tech and other green jobs to the city, our growth has been extremely rapid over the past five years.

As you read and hear more about Austin from any of our events and festivals, or the possible premier Medical School they are considering building in Austin, I hope you take the opportunity to visit and enjoy this great city.

Austin has a great Chamber of Commerce and the Austin Tourism Board can provide information on lodging, food and activities.

Anybody that has any questions about this city, feel free to call or email me.

I’ll be glad to put in a good word for Austin, Texas. And to buy you a beer if you decide to visit.

There’s no place like Austin!

4 Tips for Choosing the Right Tote Bag for Your Next Trade Show

July 16th, 2012 No comments
Tips for Selecting the Best Tote Bags for Trade Shows

Choosing the Right Trade Show Tote Bag Can Help Maximize Your ROI.

Austin, Texas One of the most popular promotional items for trade shows is the imprinted shopping bags.

Shopping bags with your logo can be seen by attendees for the entire length of the show, serving as a mini-billboard for your company — promoting your brand and your booth number.

Using a reusable branded tote bag also gives you a excellent return on your investment, as industry statistics state that the average shopping tote is viewed over 12,000 times during its lifetime — and that doesn’t even count the thousands of impressions it will make at a trade show.

That same study shows that “at an average cost of $3.00, a tote bag imprinted with a logo and message on it will be viewed 12,000+ times in a year –making the cost per impression (CPI) only $.00025, which is about one fifteenth the cost of an average city billboard ($.003), and 1/28th the cost of an average cable TV commercial ($.007) and the 1/76th cost of an average half-page black-and-white newspaper ad ($.019).”

OK, so you are convinced to use a tote bag at your next trade show or convention.  How do you choose the correct one for your convention or trade show?

I have previously written about the type of materials and fabrics to consider when choosing your convention tote.

Once you consider the options, here are three tips when choosing your next imprinted tote bags.

1) Bigger is Better: There will most likely be other booths handing out tote bags at the show.  This is not a bad thing.  It shows the value of the bags– and many of those bags will be reused down the road.

However, the key is that YOUR bag is the one that gets seen– so choose a larger, more  heavy-duty tote bag– and one with a removable plastic bottom for more strength.

As people collect and fill their smaller bags, they will want to consolidate their bags and collateral material into one larger bag– your bag.

Here are some examples of jumbo shopping bags to choose from in all price ranges and styles.

2) Brighter is Better: The bags that stand out the most tend to be the brightest color bags.  This would include neon or lime green, bright orange, red and royal blue.  Now, many companies get hung up on their corporate colors and image…and although that is very important when maintaining branding guidelines and image standards, a one color logo on a bright colored bag will achieve maximum impact.

3) For Text, Less is More: I have had clients trying to reproduce their entire mission statement or business card on their tote bags. Big mistake.

View your shopping bags as a billboard.

  • Larger fonts.
  • Bigger graphics.
  • High contrast imprint color(s).
  • 15 point font or larger.
  • A good rule of thumb is that your text should be able to be read from about 5-6 feet away for maximum effectiveness.

4) Plan in advance: Not a week goes by when we are not getting a call from a frantic trade show exhibitor asking if we can rush out a tote bag order- and FedEx it to their hotel.  Sure. We can do that.

But with advance planning, you can get better results with less stress…and save money on the freight.

If you have multiple conventions and trade shows planned for the year, then order sufficient quantity for all shows at one time to get the best quantity discount pricing.

Your promotional products distributor should be able to get you quantity breaks by combining your orders – and even pre-printing, warehousing and then drop shipping your tote bags to your events on an as-needed basis.

Also, if you plan in advance, you might be able to import a hopping bag and save even more money.  This usually requires a minimum of 5,000 bags and 3-4 months lead time- but the savings can be substantial.

Another benefit of planning your bags in advance is it allows you to consider co-op advertising to reduce your total cash outlays.  I had written this blog post on how to get your suppliers and vendors to pick up the cost of your tote bags.

Using co-op allowance dollars by printing multiple logos from your suppliers can reduce your cash outlays to practically zero – and sometime zero if you plan in advance.  Many of your vendors will rebate you a percentage of your advertising expenses for using their coop funds – and they are all too happy to pay it.  In fact, most companies never utilize their full co-op fund allowance each year — which is leaving free money on the table.  Talk to your major vendors and suppliers to see how to apply for these funds.

Follow these four simple rules and you can increase the chances for success at your next trade show or convention.

Happy Promoting.
